O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by the panel of judges. But she was a victim of major defeats in the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three followed by the second place. The judges were shocked by this and proclaimed to the public that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil was never in the bottom 3 again after an impressive string of performances. The judge Werner said, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would win in the Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol straight away.
