O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She was raised in Wheaton and went to Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. The model was featured in a few commercials prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. O'Grady's first job was as a model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then offered the main character in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Her other guest appearances included shows for television, independent movies, and numerous other shows. Her first major role was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police series NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the team between 1993 and the year 1996. She was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for each year. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by an Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
